Product Description



Water-based acrylic resin for wood architecture and metal coatings



WL-5200 is a self-crosslinked water-based acrylic resin with low MFFT and good anti-adhesion property, alcohol resistance ,heat resistance ,high hardness, highly waterproof, and breathable which is suitable for wood, architecture, and metal coatings.

  1. WL-5200 is free of heavy metals, phthalates, formaldehyde, and APEOs. It is a green product and complies with worldwide regulations about health and environment.
  2. WL-5200 is an acrylic emulsion to formulate one-component clear and pigmented primers and topcoats.
  3. Coatings based on WL-5200 provide low minimum film formation temperature (MFFT) and good anti-adhesion property. Meanwhile, it also provides excellent heat resistance.
  4. Taking the advantage of adhesion promoters added during the polymerization phase, WL-5200 provides good adhesions on glass, woods, ceramics, R/C surfaces, and metals. It can provide a film with good hardness when the coating is dried under room temperature.
  5. Formulations prepared by WL-5200 has good leveling and low foaming properties, which allows them to be applied by spraying or brushing process onto different substrates.
  6. WL-5200 can be easily thickened by regular thickeners, such as HEUR, HASE, and cellulosic thickeners. It is advisable to start with a lower level of thickener (maybe half or 1/3 the initial level according to your experience), let the formulation stabilize overnight, and then adjust the final viscosity.

  1. Coalescing and wetting aids have to be diluted with water mentioned in item 5. into a mixture. The mixture is then slowly added into the above polymer emulsion while stirring.

  1. Coating Conditions for Ceramics
  1. Viscosity: Ford #4 cup, 34 ± 4 secs
  2. Procedure:
    1. Using spray coating to apply color base coat prepared in point “3” or “4”. The coating thickness depends on end user’s requirement about coating fullness. Basically, the thickness of this base coati should be high enough to cover the background color.
    2. Allow the base coat to dry for 2 hours for the next coating.
    3. Polish the base coat slightly to improve the coating gloss.
    4. If the appearance of the first base coat is not smooth/full enough, apply the second base coat.
    5. Dry the second base coat for another 2 hours under room temperature and polish the 2nd base coat after drying.
    6. Apply the top coat prepared by formulation mentioned in point “5”.
    7. Leave the 1st top coat to dry under room temperature for 2 hours and then polish it.
    8. If the coating appearance is not glossy enough, apply another top coat by repeating the procedure “6” and “7”.
    9. Dry the final coating piece in an oven @ 40°C for 24 hours or under room temperature for 48 hours before being packaged. The final curing time depends on the local temperature and humidity.

  1. Item 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are grinded and dispersed together by conical grinding model until the particle size < 60 μm.
  2. Coalescing aid (Item 8) is slowly added into resin (Item 1) while stirring. Then the mixture is gradually added into the grinded dispersion prepared in (a). Item 9 and 10 are then separately slowly added into the mixture prepared aforementioned with gentle agitation to complete the formulation.


Coating Conditions and performance

  1. Tools for coating: gravity feed type spray gun, orifice: 2.5 mm.
  2. Caution before coating: mix the formulation well before conducting spray coating.
  3. Procedure:
    1. Using methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) to degrease the tested steel plate surface. The degreased surface is then abraded using 180 grit abrasive paper. The surface is then cleaned by MEK again before coating.
    2. The surface prepared by the procedure in point 1 is sprayed using the spray gun mentioned in (A) with the primer formulation. The wet coating thickness is 120 ~ 160 μm.
    3. The coating is then dried in an oven @ 50°C for 60 minutes. The steel plates are then removed from oven and allow it to cool under ambient temperature for 30 minutes.
